Crescent Phase Book Review

Hope?
It wasn’t worth believing it was real.
Synopsis
Twenty-four-year-old Arabella struggled to stand on her own two feet despite being incredibly hard-working. Long hours in her waitressing job did little to help provide the income needed for the one-room apartment she shared with her best friend, Letty. A childhood gift from her parents, Letty, an owl, had always remained by her side. On her 25th birthday, when Arabella blew out the candles on her birthday cake, her life changed forever. Letty flew out of the window of her cramped apartment, and in a panic, Arabella followed her. Reaching the edge of her small town, she catches the owl and returns home to find the apartment on fire. With her entire past gone up in flames and white smoke rising into the sky, Arabella felt desolate. That was, until she noticed a strange red tag pinned to Letty's leg. Taking the tag, she opened it with curiosity, and inside, a small blue note. Arabella Evans, Congratulations on your acceptance to Moon Academy.
REVIEW
Book 1 of J.P. Feather’s Moon Academy series, Crescent Phase is a tale that combines elements of ordinary struggles and extraordinary circumstances. Arabella, a hardworking 24-year-old, faces the challenges of making ends meet with her best friend, an owl named Letty, by her side. However, a surreal twist on her 25th birthday changes everything. When Letty flies away and Arabella’s home bursts into flames, her life takes a dramatic turn. Discovering a mysterious note tied to Letty’s leg, hinting at her acceptance to Moon Academy, Arabella’s story enters the realm of the supernatural.
While this story introduces a familiar, though promising, concept of a magical world filled with werewolves, witches, vampires, and dragons, the uneven pacing and the language, especially the switching between present tense and past tense, often in the same sentence, made it very difficult to read. Additionally, while I didn’t care much for the female main character, I couldn’t get enough of the male main character (I kinda love him). However, the pacing picks up around chapter 4, and if you can get past the issues with the writing, you’ll find yourself hooked by the main characters’ entwined stories, the twists and turns, the suspense, and that cliffhanger ending!
Ideal for fans of the Harry Potter and Zodiac Academy series.
